Professional Philosophy Statement

I was called to serve and being a facilitator of effective communication has allowed me to do just that. As an aspiring ASL/English interpreter I have been increasing my exposure and experiences with language and Deaf culture. The principles that guide my work are caring for others and being ethical while getting the job done. My most important qualities are perseverance and adaptability because accessibility isn’t about convenience, I will do all I can to ensure a productive exchange. I value diversity at work and being open to different perspectives. My goals in the interpreting profession are to explore Black American Sign Language and Deaf culture surrounding blackness. As a lifelong learner, I have taken measures to increase my confidence and produce more fluid interpretations.

Applied Research

In December 2022, I completed applied research focused on answering “How do I make my English to ASL interpretations more fluid?” I began with an evaluation of my previous interpreting samples and found the issue was empty pauses. So I decided to further my understanding of how to visualize and increase short-term memory retention. I dedicated time to deliberate practice for 30 consecutive days and developed my interpreting skills through journaling and feedback from trusted mentors and my cohort. The solution I found most applicable was chunking. During the completion of my introspective study, my findings revealed that I was not becoming more confident, I was signing harder. Also, I focused on competing one concept at a time; however, transitions did not have a cohesive flow. Since I have picked up reading as a way to visualize more. I have also joined organizations and advocacy groups, attended conferences, and participated in skills labs. As a lifelong learner, I have taken measures to increase my confidence and produce even more fluid interpretations.
